Clear or Seedy Glass ?

Both types of glass provide bright and clear light; it’s a matter of personal preference. Seedy glass contains air bubbles, called seeds, and has a more textured appearance that resembles the sparkled effect of raindrops on glass.

Natural Copper or Weathered Copper?

Natural – In its original state, copper has a shiny sheen. When exposed to the elements, it weathers naturally to a rich patina, forming a protective coating that adds strength and durability.

Weathered – Using an oxidation process, we speed up copper’s natural life cycle to produce a weathered finish, which will continue to mature over time to its characteristic patina.
Important: If you live within 5 miles of a coast line we recommend ordering your lantern in the natural copper finish. The salt water ocean air will quickly oxidize copper in its natural state.

Caring for Your Lantern

Your lantern needs little attention. To clean the globe, simply remove the bulb and wipe with glass cleaner and a soft cloth. All lanterns use standard light bulbs, which are easy to replace.

History of the Onion Lantern

Our Lanterns are approved
By the Newport, RI
Historical Society
In researching the history of the onion lantern we have been able to learn that during the early 1800's factories started producing clear glass and with the need for a sturdy portable lantern the globe “onion” glass was developed. Soon after the “cage” wires were added as extra protection to the globe and also allowed for a thinner, lighter weight globe. These lanterns were initially designed as a light to burn whale oil (a very clean-burning fuel) around the 19 th century and were used by railroads and shipping/ nautical companies. Originally early colonial lighting was made of tin. Unfortunately lanterns made of tin, while they looked nice did not withstand the New England climate. Later with the improved designs and the use of copper, the onion lantern became popular for use in homes and farms throughout the country.
